Dr. Joseph D. Turner,
A nationally renowned proclaimer of the Gospel and an accomplished orator. He has spoken all over the country. Dr. Turner is a regular speaker for the National Baptist Convention, Florida East Coast Baptist Convention, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations local and abroad. Dr. Turner believes in the power of one and in the power of collective work. We are indeed our brother’s keeper. Ministry that provides opportunities for personal and collective growth and outreach is viable, relevant ministry and appeals to today’s Christian.
In addition to proclaiming the Good News to our community and throughout the country, Dr. Turner strives to build up individuals and partnerships to positively impact the community. As a spiritual leader, mentor and partner, Dr. Turner has been instrumental in building coalitions within the Perrine community to do corporate ministry and increase their outreach. Breaking down walls and barriers between denominations and ethnicities is what ministry is all about. Bringing people together and celebrating their love for each other and their community is Dr. Turner’s life work. Examples include corporate Sunrise Services (West Perrine Christian Association Good Friday and Sunrise Worship Services); Community Back-to-School Block Party: an information exposition, health fair, concert and book bag give away; The Thanksgiving Feed providing cooked meals to the community and hundreds of turkeys to needy families on Thanksgiving Eve; and the Family Fun Festival: a community carnival that brings all of West Perrine and surrounding communities together for safe fun and fellowship. Events such as these do much to empower the community, as they cultivate friendships and partnerships and provide opportunities for individuals and businesses to reach out and to be reached.
Dr. Turner is interested in his community. He believes in the adage you cannot lead where you have not been and he strives to be a relevant and viable asset to the community. Growing up in Chicago and raised in a large family by his mother, Ms. Margaret Weeden Turner, after the death of his father, Deacon Johnny Turner, Sr., Dr. Turner has successfully navigated the various predicaments that many face today and as such, he is a passionate advocate for youth and families. Education and economic empowerment are two particular issues that are especially dear to him, for they are foundational to individual and collective success. To this end, Dr. Turner is a visible community member who often attends and hosts meetings with county and state officials about issues, strategies and solutions that will impact the South Dade community as a whole, build the infrastructure of Perrine, Florida, and empower the community’s youth. Dr. Turner has worked hand in hand with community leaders in response to the violence in our community and has taken to the streets to build relationships with individuals, families, community leaders and community partners.
Pastoral Background and Experience
Dr. Turner knows the effect a good mentor can have on an impressionable youth. As a member of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, Dr. Turner evolved as a leader under the mentorship of his Pastor, Dr. William R. Lott Sr. As a result of Pastor Lott’s mentoring, Dr. Turner accepted his call to ministry at the young age of 15 and eventually went on to serve as Mt. Sinai’s Children’s Church Minister from 1983-1986 before going off to pursue his education at the acclaimed Bishop College of Dallas Texas then on to Florida Memorial College, now Florida Memorial University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology (1991). Dr. Turner went on to obtain his Master of Divinity degree from Virginia Union University’s School of Theology (1994) and his Doctorate in Ministry from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton Ohio (2003). Dr. Turner credits the ongoing mentor relationship he has with his childhood Pastor and those that have developed over the years with several Peer Pastors to fuel his fervor for ministry and God’s people. Consequently, Dr. Turner strives to be a competent example for others as he serves in various capacities of leadership, including that of a husband, father, brother and friend. Anyone who has met Dr. Turner knows that he is “real”. He is approachable, kind and supportive. Dr. Turner is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Outstanding Young Men of America, 5000 Role Models of Miami-Dade County, Miami-Dade Chapter of NAACP, West Perrine Christian Association, and Family Christian Association of America. Dr. Turner believes in being a present father and a doting husband. Despite his many accolades, engagements and accomplishments, he is careful to prioritize his family time. The relationship between him and his wife is impressionable, as it exudes mutual respect, love and admiration. It is evident that they are best friends and together they are a great model of mature love and a fruitful union. Their children are successful students and active members of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. They have developed their own delightful personalities and individual talents and each is a joy to their parents, friends and associates. The fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) are evident in every member of the Turner family.
